Idris Elba teases Stringer Bell concept album – watch

Actor explains why he decided to make an album inspired by Nelson Mandela

Idris Elba has said he was inspired to make an album about Nelson Mandela after doing research for the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which he starred in last year.

The Luther actor has enlisted the help of artists such as James Blake, Mumford & Sons and Mr Hudson for his debut album ‘Mi Mandela’, out on November 24.

Speaking to NME in a video interview you can watch in full above, he explained the decision, saying: “I thought now is the time to make a collection of songs about someone special and iconic to our race.

“When I was playing Nelson Mandela, I decided to spend four months prior to actually doing the work just to understand the culture, understand where he was from, who he was, what [South Africa’s] like, what was the country’s feelings on Mandela.

“And in that journey, music kept coming up.”
