Midweek Chart Update: U2 set for Top Five entry following official ‘Songs Of Innocence’ release

Ella Henderson and Jessie J battling for Number One position in Official UK Albums Chart

U2 are on course to reach the Top Five of the Official UK Albums Chart this week following the physical release of their new album ‘Songs Of Innocence’.

The band’s latest album was given away for free to iTunes users last month. However, the album was released officially on Monday (October 13) and is currently Number Five at today’s midweek stage (October 15). The final chart placings will be revealed on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday (October 19).

U2 and Apple ‘gifted’ 500 million iTunes users with their new album without consent in September. The move sparked widespread controversy. Following complaints over the unconventional release of ‘Songs Of Innocence’, Apple released a tool to allow its customers to remove ‘Songs Of Innocence’ from their devices with just one click.

Elsewhere in the Official Albums Chart, two new entries are battling for the Number One position with Ella Henderson’s ‘Chapter One’ currently just ahead of Jessie J‘s third album ‘Sweet Talker’.

There are a further nine new entries in the Official Chart Top 40 with Jessie Ware (6), You + Me, a collaboration between Pink and City and Colour’s Dallas Green, (8) and Spandau Ballet (10) all landing in the Top Ten. Other Top 40 entries are due from Jonathan Antoine (11), Ozzy Osbourne (24), Madness (25), The 2 Bears (35) and Hoodie Allen (37).

Meanwhile, the Number One spot on the Official Singles Chart could go to One Direction and their single ‘Steal My Girl’. They will have to topple Meghan Trainor and her hit ‘All About That Bass’ first though. The current Number One remains in the poll position at today’s midweek stage.

The other new entries on this week’s Official Singles Chart at the midweek stage come from Eminem (6), DJ Watermat (9), Wilkinson (13) and Melissa Steel (20).
