Pete Waterman: ‘I produced ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)’ on cocaine’

The pop producer explained that it's the only time he's ever taken the drug

Pop producer Pete Waterman has revealed that he produced Dead Or Alive‘s 1984 single ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)’ in the middle of a cocaine binge.

Waterman has said that the drug helped keep him awake during the 36 hour studio session.

He confessed at the recent Radio Festival in Salford, via the Daily Mail, saying: “It’s the only time I have ever done cocaine in my life. Well, you know, how do you stay up for 36 hours?”

The track was released in November 1984 and finally made it to the Number One spot in the UK 17 weeks after its release, in March 1985.

‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)’ was pop production trio Stock Aitken Waterman’s first chart topping record.

Last Friday night (December 21) a host of musicians who released songs produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman’s PWL enterprise joined forces for the Hit Factory Live show at London’s O2 Arena.

Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive performed, as did Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, who teamed up to give the first live performance of their 1988 hit ‘Especially For You’ in 23 years.
