Police investigate after two deaths at Florida festival

“Unknown drug” blamed for fatalities at Sunset Music Festival.

Police in Florida are investigating after two people died at Sunset Music Festival in Tampa over the weekend.

The sold-out EDM festival starred Jack U, Hardwell and The Chainsmokers at the 30,000-capacity Raymond James Stadium on May 28-29.

Local Florida resident Katie Bermudez, 21, and Australian visitor Alex Haynes, 22, died after being admitted to St Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.

Hospital officials have yet to comment on the cause of Bermudez and Haynes’ deaths, but it has been widely reported that they died of overdoses from the same unknown drug.

A total of 57 festivalgoers were hospitalised over the weekend. A spokeswoman told local radio station WFLA: “The number of people visiting because of overdoses from Sunset was frightening.”

There were 25 arrests and 16 police cautions for marijuana at the event. A total of 60,000 people attended the event over the weekend. Organised by local promoters Disco Donnie and John Sartoro, Sunset began five years ago when it attracted a crowd of 5,000. Since then, it has seen sets by David Guetta and Carl Cox.

This year’s event also featured Marshmello, Seven Lions, Lane 8, NGTMRE, Zomboy and Dirtybird acts J PHLP, Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke. New York duo The Chainsmokers have had UK Top 20 hits with ‘Selfie’ and ‘Roses’.
