Mexican singer El Shaka shot dead hours after dispelling murder rumours

Gunmen opened fire on the star's car while he was travelling to a gig

Mexican singer El Shaka has been shot dead just hours after he quashed online rumours that he had been murdered.

The 40-year-old, whose real name was Sergio Vega, was killed on his way to a concert in Sinaloa state on Saturday night (June 26) when gunmen opened fire on his red Cadillac.

His death came just hours after he told entertainment website La Oreja that he had increased security measures and that rumours of his death were mistaken.

“It’s happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I’ve been killed, or suffered an accident,” he said. “And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her.”

At least seven grupero musicians have been killed over the past three years – the genre prominently features songs about certain drug lords and cartels, and it’s believed the murders have largely been carried out by members of rival gangs.

Vega also told the site just before his death that musicians performing grupero music were worried, but that he had entrusted himself to God, reports BBC News.
