Club that brought black music to Liverpool to be subject of new film

Documentary about Timepiece club on the way

The club credited with bringing black dance music to Liverpool is set to become the subject of a new documentary.

Timepiece used to be one of the only venues in the city that played black music, with resident DJ Les Spaine helming the club before he went to work for the Motown label.

“The Timepiece club was one of the main venues that had a major impact on black music and black youth in Liverpool,” Bea Freeman of Pidgin Productions, the company partnering with Spaine Music Co to make the film, told the Liverpool Echo.

Work on the project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and will be titled Back to the Timepiece, has only just started. A release date has not been confirmed.

Spaine will be DJing at Liverpool venue Leaf on February 7 to support the project.

At the event people who used to attend Timepiece will be invited to to share their memories of the club with each other and the film’s production team.
