Blues pianist Pinetop Perkins dies aged 97

Pianist passed away in Austin, Texas

Blues pianist Pinetop Perkins has died at the age of 97 at his home in Austin, Texas.

The pianist became the oldest ever Grammy Award winner last month when he won the Best Traditional Blues Album award for his ‘Joined At The Hip’ record. He had received a lifetime achievement award at the 2005 ceremony.

His agent Hugh Southard said Perkins died of cardiac arrest after waking up with chest pains yesterday (March 21), reports BBC News.

Perkins performed with a huge range of artists during his career, including BB King and Muddy Waters. He continued to tour right up until his passing, with Southard saying he had over 20 further performances booked this year before his death.

BB King paid tribute to Perkins, saying: “He was one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen, and he sure could play the piano. He will be missed not only by me, but by lovers of music all over the world.”
