The Shadows bassist Jet Harris dies aged 71

Musician passes away after cancer battle

The Shadows bassist Jet Harris has died of throat cancer aged 71.

Jet, who was the original bass player with the band, died at his partner’s home in Winchester, reports BBC News.

He joined the band in 1958 and came up with their name. He left the set-up in 1962 and went on to have solo hits with ‘Besame Mucho’ and ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’

Before he left the group Jet played on a number of Shadows classics including ‘Apache’, and contributed vocals to ’Feeling Fine’.

In 1998 he was awarded a Fender Lifetime Achievement Award for his role in popularising the bass guitar in Britain.

Cliff Richard, who the band backed, said: “Jet was exactly what The Shadows and I needed – a backbone holding our sound together.”
