Former D4L and 50 Cent associate was 40

Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo has died in a car crash aged 40.

The former D4L and 50 Cent associate – who’s real name is Carlos Walker – died in the early hours of this morning (September 21) after his vehicle crashed through a motorway barrier on the Interstate 285 and into multiple trees, before catching fire, according to Fulton County police.

A statement was released via Shawty Lo’s Twitter, which read: “My brother has passed he is no longer here but his spirit, his kind heart , and his music will live on Long live Shawty Lo King of Bankhead.”

Thre rapper co-founded Atlanta rap crew D4L who released their debut album, ‘Down For Life’ in 2005, which featured their biggest hit single ‘Laffy Taffy’, peaking at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2008, Lo released his debut album, ‘Units In The City’, featuring the single ‘Dey Know’, which went gold.

From then until 2014, he continued to release at least one mixtape every year and in 2011, his D4L imprint signed a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit South to release the tapes.

In 2013, a controversial documentary about his 11 children and their 10 mothers – called All My Babies’ Mamas was scrapped, in part due to an online protest.

Last month, Gucci Mane paid tribute to Lo with a bar on ‘Last Time’, his single with Travis Scott, which featured the lyrics: Like Shawty Lo, I got 10 children/Yeah, Lo my partner/Wop!
