Belgium’s Tomorrowland is the most popular festival of 2015 so far, according to Viagogo

Tickets for Tomorrowland outselling other festivals on Viagogo website

Belgium’s Tomorrowland is the most popular festival in 2015, according to ticketing site Viagogo.

Though the festival season is yet to get underway, the website has reported a 157% rise in overall ticket demand compared to last year, while global festivals are more popular than domestic events for the first time.

According to ticket searches on Viagogo’s 55 global websites, the most popular festival of 2015 is the Belgium edition of Tomorrowland, even though event organisers are yet to announce a line-up. In second place is Coachella (US), while the Brazil edition of Tomorrowland is third. Other festivals in the Top 10 include Isle of Wight (UK) and Benicassim (Spain).

Meanwhile, the top country for festival ticket searches is the US, followed by Germany and the UK. A viagogo spokesperson said: “Music fans typically stave off the January blues by snapping up tickets to see their favourite acts and this year it looks like many are planning to combine their summer holidays with a trip to a foreign festival.”

It was reported yesterday that Festival Republic boss Melvin Benn had disputed claims that festival line-ups are too male-dominated. Speaking about the issue after being presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this week’s European Festival Awards, Benn said: “I don’t think there’s any young women thinking of joining a band now that think, ‘There’s no point, because I’m going to be sidelined’. I don’t think sidelining exists, but there was certainly lack of opportunity. But there’s an abundance of opportunity now.”
