Relentless Here To Be Heard competition winners Hunck play Reading Festival set

The London quintet performed first on the Festival Republic stage on Saturday (August 29)

The winners of Relentless’ ‘Here To Be Heard’ competition have kicked off proceedings at the second day of Reading Festival 2015 on Saturday (August 29).

London band Hunck were the first act to perform on the Festival Republic stage, playing sultry indie that mixes influences like Blood Orange with early Mystery Jets.

“It’s pretty early, but thanks for coming to watch me,” said guitarist Thomas Wykes midway through the set. “Thanks mate,” shot back keyboardist and singer Frederik Tyson-Brown.

During the group’s 25-minute performance, they played songs including ‘Never Had A Dream’, ‘So Far So Deep’ and a short instrumental track.

“Thank you very much Reading,” said Tyson-Brown as the set came to a close. “We hope you’ve had a nice breakfast with us.”

The ‘Here To Be Heard’ competition is now in its third year, and is all about showcasing the best new music and highlighting it to a bigger audience. The band category was judged by Everything Everything who selected Hunck. Meanwhile, Modestep lead the search for new DJs. Later this weekend, the winner of that category, DJ Mowbz will perform at Leeds festival.

Hunck formed last year, with their sound described as “slacker rock and dream pop”. The band featured in NME’s Playlist Of The Week last April.

The band said of the win: “We’re here and we’ve been heard and it feels just great – thank you Everything Everything, Relentless and everyone who voted to put 5 Huncks on the stage at Reading Festival.”

Speaking to NME after the show, Tyson-Brown said: “Our music can be a little melancholy but that’s how we like it. It was lovely to be able to play out our set to a brand new audience at Reading. We were lucky because the only act we clashed with was breakfast – excellent scheduling.”
