Elusive artist launches Disney-inspired show in Weston-super-Mare
Bands and artists including Run The Jewels and Savages will perform at Dismaland, a new Disney-inspired ‘bemusement park’ created by Banksy.
The gigs will take place at Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare, where Dismaland is based. The park boasts 18 attractions including work from Banksy himself, as well as artists including artists Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Jimmy Cauty. The derelict seafront lido will be open for six weeks, with musicians playing live on the Friday night of each week.
Music at Dismaland begins on August 28 with DJ Yoda and Peanut Butter Wolf performing alongside Breakbeat Lou. The following week (September 4) Run The Jewels will appear live, while Sleaford Mods and Savages will both play on September 18. A comedy night featuring Simon Munnery will take place on September 11 with Kate Tempest, Pussy Riot and Massive Attack all booked for the last night on September 25.
In a rare statement, Banksy said: “I loved the Tropicana as a kid, so getting to throw these doors open again is a real honour. I hope everyone from Weston will take the opportunity to once more stand in a puddle of murky water eating cold chips to the sound of crying children.”
Meanwhile, Nigel Ashton, leader of North Somerset Council, said: “We have been working closely with the organisers for months now, and, for obvious reasons, have had to remain tight-lipped about the true nature of the event.
“In fact, only four people in the entire council knew what was really happening.”
Dismaland is Banksy’s first official show in the UK since 2009’s ‘Banksy v Bristol Museum’.
