A teaser clip from a new documentary about Warpaint, directed by Chris Cunningham, has been unveiled.
Click above to watch the two-minute, 40-second long clip, which is set to Cunningham’s own audio cut of the band’s single ‘Love Is To Die’. The documentary has been filmed over the past two years, during the making of the band’s self-titled second album, which is released today (January 20). Cunningham also worked on the artwork for ‘Warpaint’. Speaking to Dazed Digital about the film project, director Cunningham said: “Its been a long time since I’ve wanted to make a music video in a traditional way, so a video diary is more appealing to me. I thought what might be interesting would be to film stuff in this big way and make a surrealist thing.”
He continued: “It covers everything around and during the making of the record, but it’s not a ‘making of’. It’s me filming with a camera whenever I have one and them filming on their phones, and then I’ve been taking outtakes and random pieces of drumming and making new remixes of their songs and using that as a soundtrack.”
The band recently talked about ‘Warpaint’, saying it’s a “sexy” record. Guitarist Theresa Wayman said: “It was an actual adjective we would use, like, ‘Oh, that’s sexy’ or ‘I think it would be sexier if we did this…’ That actually happened quite a bit.”
Of their second album’s sensual nature, singer Emily Kokal added: “I think that’s something we have an unspoken ability to communicate, perhaps because we are four women. If you listen to the lyrics, a beat or a bassline it will reflect that sensuality.”
Earlier this month Warpaint announced details of a one-off London show. The band will play London’s Electrowerkz on January 22 before their full UK tour kicks off the next day at Brighton Dome.
