The band's comeback single has some strange new visuals
Smashing Pumpkins have shared their bizarre new video for comeback single ‘Solara’.
The track is the first to be released since three-quarters of the band’s classic line-up reunited. The current line-up of the group is original members frontman Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, plus guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Bassist Jack Bates and keyboardist Katie Cole will join them on tour.
In the Nick Koenig-directed video for ‘Solara’, Corgan is seen being put on a metal leash by three tracksuited women. At one point, he escapes and finds himself in a room with mimes guarding over a female mime “giving birth”. Watch it below now.
Smashing Pumpkins played their first show since reuniting last night (June 27) at Los Angeles’ 400-capacity Troubadour. Phones and cameras were banned from the gig, where the group ran through past hits and covered Joy Division‘s ‘Transmission’ with AFI‘s Davey Havok.
Meanwhile, Schroeder recently commented on whether he feels any rivalry with Iha. He has been part of the band since Pumpkins’ 2007 comeback album ‘Zeitgeist‘. “The whole thing is rather funny to me,” he said. “People seem to think that James and I should be enemies—you know, like, ‘He’s taking your job’. But we’re totally cool, and there’s been no weirdness at all. In the short time that we’ve been together, it’s been extremely pleasant.”
Smashing Pumpkins are due to begin their North American tour in Glendale, Arizona on July 12. They will arrive in the UK for a show at London’s SSE Arena Wembley on October 16. Tickets are available here. No other UK shows have been confirmed at present.
