The Glaswegian trio, who are preparing to release their third album ‘Love Is Dead‘, performed the new version for Honda Stages and iHeartRadio.
Speaking about ‘XO’, Martin Doherty said: “We have been talking about covering [it] for years. It’s one of those moments where you don’t forget the first time you hear a song and it speaks to you on that level. ‘XO’ was a moment like that for all of us. We were on tour, all of us losing our minds about this Beyoncé tune that had just come into the world.”
He added that the band had tried to cover it before, using “big production”, but it “always seemed somehow wrong or somehow inferior”.
Singer Lauren Mayberry also noted about her vocals, “I am aware I don’t sound like Beyoncé, I can’t sing like Beyoncé, but it’s more an homage to Beyoncé.”
Mayberry recently called out the double standards of the entertainment industry, arguing that more needs to be done in attitudes towards those accused of sexual misconduct.
Having recently said that more needs to be done to act upon the message of the #MeToo movment, now Mayberry has said that the industry needs to be more ‘consistent’ in its approach to how it promotes the work of those accused of abuse. She mentioned Dr Luke in the wake of his legal dispute with Kesha as an example.
