The first full-length trailer for Jay-Z‘s Trayvon Martin documentary has been shared online.
Martin was shot and killed in 2012 by George Zimmerman, who was a neighbourhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman reported the unarmed Martin to the police, saying he appeared “suspicious” before an altercation between the two broke out and Zimmerman shot him.
After claiming it was self-defence, he was later acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Once Zimmerman was acquitted, protests were held across the United States.
Now, Jay-Z has produced a six-part miniseries about Martin, called Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story. It will premiere on Paramount in the US on July 30. Watch the trailer above.
According to a press release, the series examines the tragedy of the teenager’s death as well as “race, politics, power, money, and the criminal justice system.” The episodes will feature interviews with Martin’s parents and family, as well as surveillance footage from the night of his murder.
Jay-Z appeared at a peace walk in memory of Martin earlier this year. He praised the teenager’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, and said: “We want to make sure that we stand and support and never forget that Trayvon serves as a beacon of light to the people out here. So you guys will never have to go through the pain and hurt these guys went through.”
The rapper was threatened by Zimmerman in December 2017, after claiming he and his family had been harassed by the team making the new docu-series. “Anyone who fucks with my parents will be fed to an alligator,” he warned. “I know how to handle people who fuck with me, I have since February 2012.”
