The National recreated the video for ‘Dark Side of the Gym’ as they performed the track with ballet dancers on US TV. Check out the clip below.
The band released their seventh LP ‘Sleep Well Beast’ in 2017. In a four-star review, NME said that the record sees Matt Berninger and co. “stray outside the previously clearly defined lines of what The National sound is.”
While the group have since started to perform new tracks at recent shows, they returned to last year’s album for an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon last night (October 1).
With help from Justin Peck – who choreographed and starred in the track’s original video – and Patricia Delgado, the band performed ‘Dark Side of the Gym’ as the NYC Ballet dancers took centre stage.
“I thought the dancers at the forefront were so different and enjoyable,” one YouTube user said of the unique performance. “They were a perfect pairing for the music and singing. A total treat!” Another hailed the appearance as “magical”.
Meanwhile, The National recently paid tribute to Scott Hutchison, dedicating the track ‘About Today’ to the Frightened Rabbit frontman.
Looking forward to their next album, the band recently told NME that it’s well beyond the halfway point of completion. According to Bryce Dessner, their eighth full-length is driven by “looseness” and “an energy that’s evaded us in the past”.
“‘Sleep Well Beast’ still feels like it’s going somewhere – it hasn’t yet arrived completely to me,” added Aaron Dessner.
Drummer Bryan Devendorf also described their next effort as a “departure record.” “It’s going to be more than just a record,” he continued. “The other material that’s accompanying it is basically inspiring the record. It’s a collaborative project. I’ve said too much already…”
