Here's what went down as they kicked off the Better Oblivion Community Center world tour
The pair were performing at The Bunkhouse Saloon in Las Vegas on the first of their run of shows, where they honoured hometown heroes The Killers with a melancholic and stripped-back rendition of the track from 2008’s ‘Day And Age‘.
The Killers then responded by sharing footage of the cover and writing on Instagram: “An honour to have people we love do their take on our songs. Damned good. Thank you.”
While naturally leaning on material from their acclaimed self-titled debut album, Better Oblivion Community Center also covered The Replacements’ ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ as well as performing a ‘punk’ version of Bridgers’ own fan favourite ‘Funeral’ alongside Oberst’s Bright Eyes tracks ‘Lua’ and ‘Bad Blood’.
Better Oblivion Community Center’s setlist was:
Big Black Heart
Can’t Hardly Wait (The Replacements cover)
Exception to the Rule
Lua (Bright Eyes song)
Didn’t Know What I Was in For
Bad Blood (Bright Eyes cover)
Funeral (Phoebe Bridgers song)
Human (The Killers cover)
Speaking to NME about what to expect from the tour, Bridgers said: “I think we’re going to try to have fun with it, but we’re not quite sure what [the setlist will be yet].”
Oberst added: “The record is only 40 or so minutes, so in order for us to do a headline set we’re going to have to come up with some more material. I think [we’ll do] covers and maybe reworking some of our own songs too.”
