Earlier this year, former Catchphrase host Roy Walker claimed that Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder had “saved” his life while filming a new reality TV show, with footage of the incident in question now airing.
Both stars appeared on ITV’s 100 Years Younger in 21 Days, a show that follows a group of celebrities undergoing a series of physical activities in an attempt to roll back the years. Another episode of the show saw Ryder get an enema.
Walker had previously said that he was “eternally grateful” to Ryder for his help during an incident when Walker cut his leg while paddleboarding in Sardinia, later claiming that the Madchester icon had “saved” his life.
Footage of the incident aired last night (March 20), but it doesn’t appear to show Ryder actively diving into the water, as he had previously joked. Watch in the clip below.
Appearing on This Morning in February, Ryder said: “In my imagination, I was all bronzed in my Speedos and I dived into the water, and I saved Roy. [In fact] I just put my hands in.”
It’s not the first time Ryder has ventured into reality TV. In 2010 he took part in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here and has appeared on Channel 4’s cooking show Come Dine With Me.
In 2016, the Black Grape frontman spoke out against anyone who questions his legitimacy as a musician for appearing on such shows.
“I don’t give a fuck if some young smart arse goes, ‘Hey, you’re not a real musician, ‘cos you did Come Dine With Me,’” he said. “It’s like, Fuck off! Let’s see where you are 10, 15 years down the line, you sad c*nt.”
