GO, WEST!

Here at NME.COM we're still backing Bob The Builder, though some have switched allegiance to The Wombles...

SUGABABES, OXIDE & NEUTRINO and THE WOMBLES are all looking for the Christmas Number One spot by releasing singles today (December 18), but, as predicted, all bets are on WESTLIFE to be top of the chart this coming Sunday (December 24).

Sugababes release their new single, ‘New Year’ today via London, while Oxide & Neutrino release ‘No Good For Me’, the single based on the same sample Prodigy used on their classic ‘No Good (Start The Dance)’. Elsewhere, Sir Killalot Vs Robobabe 069 release ‘Robot Wars’, inspired by the television show of the same name and The Wombles and Roy Wood release ‘I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Christmas Everyday’.

However, according to a chart expert at HMV in London, Westlife’s ‘What Makes A Man’ remains firm favourite to go to the top. He said: “It would take an earthquake to stop them, and Bob The Builder is the only man who could manage it. Westlife have done huge amounts of press and promotion, and they should do it.

“Of the other releases, ‘Robot Wars’ could go top ten, and the Sugababes are an outside bet for Number One, but realistically it should go Top Five.”

According to bookmaker William Hill, who close their books tomorrow evening (December 19), the latest odds for the Christmas Number One have Westlife at 4-6 favourite, followed by Bob The Builder (11-10), Eminem (25-1), Craig (‘Big Brother’) (33-1), Robbie Williams (33-1), Sugababes (40-1), Charlotte Church (40-1) and Ronan Keating (40-1).
