Will Young and James Blunt win biggest selling single and album of the noughties

Plus there are high entries for Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, The Beatles and Lady GaGa

Will Young and James Blunt have scored the biggest selling UK single and album sales of the decade.

‘Anything Is Possible/Evergreen’, Young‘s 2002 debut single sold 1.8m copies to become the biggest selling single of the noughties, pipping fellow Pop Idol star Gareth Gates‘Unchained Melody’ into second place.

Blunt‘s 2005 debut LP ‘Back To Bedlam’ meanwhile sold 3.2 million copies to top the end-of-the-decade chart, ahead of Dido‘s debut ‘No Angel’ album, which was originally released in 1999 but enjoyed success in 2001, and Amy Winehouse‘s 2006 album ‘Back To Black’, which both sold more than 3 million units, according to the Official Charts Company.

Elsewhere in the album chart, The Beatles went in at Number Six with their 2000 compilation ‘1’ making them the most enduring act on the charts, with sales of 2.9 million while Coldplay‘s 2002 LP ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’ finished at eight.

Along with Robbie Williams, Chris Martin and co, both sold enough albums to get three titles each in the Top 20 for the decade, while amounting personal totals of over 10 million and 9 million sales each.

Of the more recent releases, Kings Of Leon‘s 2008 album ‘Only By The Night’ sold 2.2 million copies to make the decade Top 20, while the likely biggest selling album of 2009 – Susan Boyle‘s ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ – has sold more than 1.6 million copies in six weeks, enough to put itself close to the Top 50 biggest albums of the decade.

The highest ranking single from 2009 meanwhile was Lady Gaga‘s ‘Poker Face’, which finds itself in 15th place in the overall list.

On the movie’s front 2008’s ‘Mamma Mia!’ was the most popular film of the decade selling 5.9 million copies ahead of ‘Gladiator’ and the first part of the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy: ‘The Fellowship Of The Ring’.

As for complilations, 2000’s ‘Now! 47’ – featuring singles such as Robbie Williams‘s ‘Rock DJ’ and U2‘s ‘Beautiful Day’ – was the biggest selling compilation of the decade.

‘Now’ was by far the most successful compilation brand, accounting for 29 of the Top 50 biggest compilation releases.
