Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA to direct new action thriller ‘Breakout’

Rapper and producer to direct his third film next year

Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA has signed on to direct new action thriller Breakout.

The film will be RZA’s third outing as a director and will begin production in 2016. Richard D’Ovidio (TV’s The Blacklist and 2013 horror flick The Damned) has written the script and the film will be released by Amasia Entertainment, whose new film Mr Right stars RZA in an acting role.

Variety reports that Breakout is the story of a young photographer falsely arrested in Bangladesh for drug trafficking. Two friends of his wealthy father must then break him out of prison.

“The multi-talented RZA has mastered the art of music, acting and filmmaking,” Amasia’s Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo said. “We are ecstatic to have him behind the camera on our next project as he brings a fresh and innovative take to this international action thriller from Rich D’Ovidio.”

RZA made his directorial debut with The Man With the Iron Fists in 2012. Jill Scott and Azealia Banks star in his second film Coco, which will be released in 2016.

Meanwhile, Wu Tang Clan member Raekwon has stated that he’d be open to a film about the legendary hip-hop group following the success of NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.

“When we make a Wu movie, bet your ass it’s gonna be serious because we gotta tell the truth,” Raekwon said.

He added: “I think that’s what I love about the Straight Outta Compton movie is that they told the truth. When we do get to that level and it happens, it has to be the real story. It’s gonna be an interesting one, cause I said – [fellow Wu-Tang member] RZA hit the lotto one day. He knew who he had, but he didn’t know what he had. So let’s keep it right there.”

Raekwon also stated that a documentary about his solo debut ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ is “already in the plans”.
