YEAH YEAH YEAHS played a triumphant set at the SYDNEY leg of Australia’s LIVID FESTIVAL over the weekend (October 11), despite singer KAREN O falling offstage earlier in the week and being treated for concussion.
As reported on NME.COM, Karen fell headfirst in to the photo pit of a gig at the Sydney Metro Theatre last Thursday. After being helped back onstage by road crew and boyfriend Angus Andrew – whose band The Liars are supporting Yeah Yeah Yeahs during their current Australian tour – O insisted on finishing the set with an icepack held to her head. But the band only made it through one song before she said she had “to go to hospital” and left the stage. She was then rushed to a nearby emergency ward.
“We played the other night and I had a pretty bad fall,“ she told the Livid crowd in the Triple J tent, after being brought onstage by Andrew in a wheelchair. “I had to go the emergency room and so tonight … we’re starting where we left off!” The band then played ‘Maps’ – with a grinning Karen standing up to deafening applause mid-way through the song.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs made it through an eight-song set before Karen – sporting a bandage above her left elbow and visibly subdued from the bands previous notoriously frenzied stage shows – was again ushered offstage by road crew and Andrew. She also joked about the dance of death that “almost killed me” and thanked the crowd for their support.
Earlier, Melbourne-born Andrew had called her “an Aussie battler”, saying; “She’s going to come out and play songs for you but please be gentle on her. It‘s like she‘s been in a car accident. Would you want to play after that? I don‘t think so!”
Around 25,000 fans braved freezing temperatures to attend the festival, which also included The White Stripes, Linkin Park, BRMC, Turbonegro and The Bumblebeez.
