Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain’s childhood home up for sale

Singer's family interested in turning house into museum

The childhood home of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain has been put up for sale.

As the BBC reports, the singer’s mother, Wendy O’Connor, has put the bungalow in Aberdeen, Washington on the market for $500,000 (£313,000), even though it was last valued at less than $67,000 (£42,000). She and Cobain’s father originally purchase the house when the singer was just two years-old, in 1969. He lived there until his parents separated when he was nine, and also returned for another stint in the home as a teenager.

Cobain’s family also said that, with the house being located near the Kurt Cobain Riverfront Park dedicated to his memory, they would welcome a partnership to turn the building into a museum. His sister Kim Cobain said: “We’ve decided to sell the home to create a legacy for Kurt, and yes, there are some mixed feelings since we have all loved the home and it carries so many great memories. But our family has moved on from Washington, and feel it’s time to let go of the home.”

Nirvana celebrate the 20th anniversary of their final studio album ‘In Utero’ this week. A remastered version of the LP has been released, which features 70 tracks including previously unreleased recordings and demos, B-sides and compilation tracks and live material featuring the band’s final touring line-up of Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear.

Earlier today, Grohl said that people should listen to ‘In Utero’ “without thinking of Kurt dying”. “The album should be listened to as it was the day it came out,” he said. “That’s my problem with the record. I used to like to listen to it. And I don’t anymore, because of that. To me, if you listen to it without thinking of Kurt dying, you might get the original intention of the record.”

Previously, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has hailed ‘In Utero’ as a testament to the vision of Kurt Cobain. “Y’know, it’s bittersweet, it’s a heavy record,” he said during an interview on XFM. “I’m really proud of it. It’s really good and it is a testimony to the artistic vision of Kurt Cobain. You listen to that record and the intensity and that power and that is a tribute to Kurt’s vision.”

A host of bands including The Vaccines, Everything Everything, Fidlar, Chvrches, Deap Vally and Jagwar Ma have paid tribute to Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, which is celebrating 20 years since its release. Check out what they’ve got to say in the video here.
