It looks like the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ reboot is happening – without Johnny Depp

The actor starred in five 'Pirates' movies over the last 15 years

A Pirates of the Caribbean reboot seems to have been confirmed but it looks like Johnny Depp won’t be returning to the franchise.

Depp appeared as Captain Jack Sparrow in all five of the original Pirates of the Caribbean movies from 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl to last year’s Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Speaking to DailyMailTV, The Curse of the Black Pearl screenwriter Stuart Beattie said that it was “an honour” the series was getting a reboot, adding that he would not be working on the new versions.

And it looks like he’s not the only one not involved in the project. Speaking of Depp’s involvement, Beattie described it as “a great run”, indicating that Depp won’t be returning.

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

“I think he’s had a great run. Obviously he’s made that character his own and it’s become the thing that he’s most famous for now,” he said. “‘And kids all over the world love him as that character. It’s been great for him and it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

Beattie added that he feels Jack Sparrow will be Depp’s most-remembered character. “I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It’s the only character he’s played five times, it’s the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals,” he said.

“Before Jack Sparrow came along, [Depp] was considered this kind of quirky, independent actor that made these really cool little Tim Burton films, but he was by no means a movie star and a lot of people thought we were crazy for casting him at the time.

“Because he wasn’t a proven commodity; you know, a big movie star. And we were making a big movie and we were putting this quirky, independent actor in the middle of it and people thought we were crazy. The fact that it worked is a miracle.

“They were certainly nervous watching the rushes everyday but when it all came together, something just clicked and it was magic and connected with audiences. I’m proud to be a part of it.”
