The app has topped Candy Crush Saga for daily active users
Pokémon Go is reportedly the most popular mobile game in US history.
The game, which officially launched in America just over a week ago, is an app-based augmented-reality edition of the popular video game franchise and sees the fictional creatures superimposed into real life settings. Users can roam the real world to search for Pokémon. It became available in the UK earlier this week.
A new study has shown that Pokémon Go has attracted just under 21 million daily active users in the United States, surpassing Candy Crush Saga‘s peak US audience of 20 million users a day.
However, another report suggests that Candy Crush Saga users spend more time playing that game than Pokémon Go gamers do. Candy Crush Saga has a average total daily usage of approximately 43 minutes compared to Pokémon Go‘s 33.5 minutes.
Japanese computer giant Nintendo has seen its shares soar 56% since the game launched just over a week ago, the BBC reports. On Monday (July 11) alone, Nintendo shares rocketed by 25%.
The game has attracted controversy since its release, with police in Australia issuing a warning over gamer safety that users should be aware of their surroundings, while it has also been reported that a gamer found a dead body while playing the game.
In other Pokémon Go news, an Australian was sacked earlier this week after complaining that the game isn’t available in his new home of Singapore. According to the Daily Mail, Aussie expat Sonny Truyen wrote on Facebook over the weekend: “You can’t f*****g catch Pokémon in this piece of f*****g s*** country.”
A man has even quit his job to embark on a two-month long Pokémon Go hunt, while reports suggest that a Pokémon Go film could be in the works.
