Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s stories will be brought to the small screen courtesy of Netflix.
The streaming giant is to create a Roald Dahl universe with adaptions of Matilda, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Twits in the pipeline.
Production of the as-yet-unknown first instalment in the “animated event series” begins in 2019.
Netflix said the programmes would “remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl”. The partnership was approved by the late author’s estate.
It’s estimated that Dahl has sold more than 200 million books worldwide. His stories are available in 58 languages.

Speaking about the news, Felicity Dahl, the writer’s widow, said it was “an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company/ Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”
A spokesperson for Netflix said: “We have great creative ambition to reimagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values.”
Dahl’s stories have up until now had the silver screen treatment, including two film productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1971, 2005) and James and the Giant Peach (1996).
A movie adaptation of Matilda, was also released in 1996. The latter story was also adapted for a long-running stage production – Matilda The Musical – which premiered in the UK in 2010.
