Watch Sam Smith reveal he identifies as non-binary in emotional new interview

"I've always had a bit of a war within my body"

Sam Smith has revealed that he identifies as non-binary in an emotional new interview.

Speaking to Jameela Jamil, the singer, who said it was the first time he’d spoken about the topic, revealed he’d “always had a bit of a war within my body.”

Smith said he made the discovery after identifying with people who had come out as non-binary and genderqueer, saying their anecdotes sounded familiar. You can watch the full interview below:

Speaking about his realisation, Smith said that he once resented the fact his body moved in a “feminine” way. He went on to say that hearing stories about people who had come out as non-binary and genderqueer led initially to more uncertainty. “It’s something that I’m not even sure of myself,” he told Jamil.

He added: “I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head, and I’ve sometimes sat down and questioned, ‘Do I want a sex change?’ And it’s something that I still think about. Do I want to. But I don’t think it is.

“When I saw the word ‘non-binary’, ‘genderqueer’, and I read into it, and I heard these people speaking I was like, ‘F***, that is me’.”

Speaking about how he sees the terms, Smith added: “You are just you. You are a mixture of all different things. You’re your own special creation. That’s how I take it…

“I’m not male or female, I think I float somewhere in between. It’s all on a spectrum. I think the same with sexuality.”

Late last year, Smith shared a new song that featured on the BBC and Netflix’s Watership Down adaptation.

The song, titled ‘Fire on Fire’, was recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in September.

Smith also appeared at this year’s BRIT awards, performing alongside Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa and Rag’n’ Bone Man. The mash-up performance featured a medley of Harris’ most recent hits before he accepted the award for Best Producer.
