Star Wars reveals why dark side lightsabers are red

EK Johnston's new book offers in-depth explanation

It has been revealed why the lightsabers of the dark side in Star Wars are red in colour.

The Star Wars franchise has long depicted Sith or dark side Force users with red lightsabers and goodies with blue or green sabers.

Fans have long assumed that the colour choices were simply for easy visual contrast between two opposing sides, but now EK Johnston’s new spin-off novel, Star Wars: Ahsoka, has offered a more in-depth explanation.

As ScreenRant reports: “Kyber crystals choose Force users and present themselves to their desired owner, but dark siders don’t experience this same connection to the cystals. The only way the Sith and other dark side Force users can collect kyber crystals is by stealing them or plundering them off the bodies of their fallen foes.”

“Even if a dark sider were to acquire a kyber crystal from a green or blue saber, the act of bending the crystal to their will in a new lightsaber will cause the crystal to ‘bleed,’ turning it red.”

Meanwhile, a new trailer was recently released for upcoming Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One. Watch here.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, as well as Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first in Disney’s “Anthology Series” of spin-off films that will continue with the currently untitled Han Solo prequel movie due in 2018. It was announced in July that rising star Alden Ehrenreich has been cast as a younger version of the character made famous by Harrison Ford. A third Anthology Series film will follow in 2020, Disney confirmed earlier this week.

In May, it was reported that Disney had ordered weeks of costly reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the goal of the reshoots will be to lighten the mood” as right now Rogue One has the “feel of a war movie”.
