‘Straight Outta Compton’ tops the US box office

NWA biopic takes grossed $56.1 million (£36.9 million) over its opening weekend

NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton has topped the US box office.

The F. Gary Gray-helmed movie doesn’t open in the UK and Ireland until August 28, but it was released in the US last Friday (August 14) and grossed an impressive $56.1 million (£36.9 million) over its opening weekend, Collider reports.

Guy Ritchie’sThe Man from U.N.C.L.E., meanwhile, opened to just $13.5 million against a budget of over $80 million.

Straight Outta Compton stars Marcus Callender as Dr Dre, Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr as his father, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown Jr as DJ Yella.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reportedly sent officers from their gang enforcement unit to oversee proceedings at the film’s premiere last week (August 10). Explaining why they deployed “several officers” to the premiere, LAPD’s Central Bureau Officer Mike Lopez said: “We want everybody to enjoy the event. Better safe than sorry.”
