Suede reveal new video ‘Life is Golden’, filmed near Chernobyl

It's the first official single from their eighth album

Suede have shared the first official single from their forthcoming eighth studio album ‘The Blue Hour’. You can watch the video for ‘Life is Golden’ below.

The clip was directed by Mike Christie, who Christie previously worked with the band in 1993 during their collaboration with filmmaker Derek Jarman live at the Clapham Grand.

It was shot in Pripyat, the Ukrainian town that was abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

Speaking of the video Christie said: “It’s not about the tragedy of the disaster that happened all those years ago – it’s about the unstoppable force of life that’s consumed the desolate landscape left behind by humans. It seemed wonderfully apt to set the song to cracked concrete, all conquered by towering golden trees.”

Though it’s the first ‘official’ single from ‘The Blue Hour’, two tracks from the record are already available. ‘The Invisibles’ appeared in June, while ‘Don’t Be Afraid If Nobody Loves You’ was released in July.

‘The Blue Hour’ is being billed as the final part of a triptych that began with 2013’s comeback album ‘Bloodsports’, followed by ‘Night Thoughts’ in 2016. ‘The Blue Hour’ is released on September 21.

Of the album, Suede singer Brett Anderson recently told NME: “It’s quite dank and troubling. A lot of this is about the terrors of childhood, so it’s quite unpleasant in lots of ways. I think Suede should be unpleasant, that’s the point of a band like Suede. Whenever we’ve tried to pleasant, it never works.”

He added: “We have to inhabit Suedeworld and it’s not a very nice place! It’s set in a rural landscape, on the hard shoulder of the motorway, among the B-roads and among the rubbish that’s been fly-tipped. It’s set by a chain link fence with a dead badger lying rotting in the ground.”

The band are also set to embark on a short European tour in October, which includes a show at London’s Eventim Apollo on October 12. Tickets are available here.
