The Walking Dead boss Scott Gimple has given fans an update on the upcoming Rick Grimes spin-off movies.
Portrayed by Andrew Lincoln on the hit AMC show, Grimes met his gruesome end in November of last year. However, it was confirmed shortly after that the character would be returning in three spin-off films. “There is more story to tell and we’ll be telling it,” Gimple said.
Now, following news of further big-screen adaptations, the writer has teased what to expect from Grimes’ next chapter.
“Right now 2020 is a really big year for the [Walking Dead] universe in general, and the shows,” he said during the 2019 Wondercon convention (via Digital Spy). “It’s the beginning of our next decade so we’re kicking off in style.”
Despite hinting at big things to come, Gimple didn’t discuss when filming would begin or mention a release date for the first outing.
Back in January, Andrew Lincoln revealed that the movies are set to explore the “wider world” of The Walking Dead‘s universe. “I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista,” said the actor.
“And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition.”
Meanwhile, many fans of The Walking Dead recently aired the theory that Rick Grimes would make a return in the finale of season 9.
