Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to divorce

Hollywood couple split after five years of marriage

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are set to divorce after over five years of marriage, according to reports.

The Hollywood A-list couple tied the knot in November 2006 but, according to TMZ, former Dawson’s Creek star Holmes filed divorce papers in New York earlier this week citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.

A statement issued by her attorney Jonathan Wolfe said: “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

A spokesman for Cruise, meanwhile, read: “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.”

TMZ also suggests that they’ve been told by sources that there is some “nastiness” to their split, with Holmes seeking sole custody of their six-year-old daughter, Suri. Cruise, meanwhile, was said to be “very sad” about Holmes’ decision to file for divorce and “did not see this coming”.

The couple are thought to have amassed a joint fortune worth approximately £175 million. Cruise, who was previously married twice before – firstly to actress Mimi Rogers, and then later to Australian star Nicole Kidman – is currently working on a new film, Oblivion, which will be sountracked by M83’s Anthony Gonzalez.
