Tom Cruise confirms filming has begun on ‘Top Gun 2’

'I feel the need...'

Tom Cruise has shared a tweet confirming that filming has begun on the long awaited Top Gun 2.

The Mission Impossible star posted a picture of the original film with the famous line: “FEEL THE NEED”, along with a caption saying Day 1, suggesting the first day of shooting has started.

Cruise also tagged producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance Media, who are tipped to be behind the sequel. You can view the tweet below.

According to Variety, the film is called Top Gun: Maverick and will be set in a world of drone technology.

Cruise confirmed last year that a sequel to the 80s classic was in the pipeline.

He told Australian TV show Sunrise at the time: “It’s true. I’m going to start probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening. It’s definitely happening. You’re the first people I’ve said it to – you asked me and so I’m telling you.”

Top Gun producer Bruckheimer said that he had met Cruise in 2016 to discuss the sequel.

The first film was directed by the late Tony Scott, who died in 2012.

Earlier this year, Cruise also made his Instagram debut to reveal title of Mission Impossible 6 – Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

The action thriller is set to be released on July 27. It will also star Vanessa Kirby, Rebecca Ferguson and Henry Cavill.
