‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ – origins of Tony Stark’s nemesis revealed

Joss Whedon's Marvel epic pits Iron Man against his own creation

Joss Whedon’s follow up to the 2012 superhero smash Avengers Assemble adds more Avenger firepower and we now know more about the origins of their foe – developed by Tony Stark himself.

Joining the already hefty hero squad Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) may be able to lend Stark a helping hand but Chris Hemsworth (Thor) warned, “It’s not the good version that could’ve come from (Stark’s) intellect and personality… It’s the bad son.”

After a recent set visit Entertainment Weekly disclosed details of the Avengers’ new nemesis Ultron.

In the Marvel comics Ultron’s origin story saw him built by scientist Hank Pym (AKA Ant-Man). However, for his big screen outing Ultron (James Spader), created as a force for protecting the world, is re-imagined as the brainchild of Tony Stark to be “the ultimate drone, a way for Iron Man to abdicate his duties and offload them onto a fully mechanized protector” but his creation goes Pete Tong.

Joss Whedon’s villain warns the citizens of Earth: “I know you’re ‘good’ people… I know you mean well, but you just didn’t think it through… There is only one path to peace… Your extermination.”

Heavy stuff. But can it beat the reveal of the reality behind Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin? We’ll have to wait until next year to find out. Avengers: Age of Ultron will dawn in UK cinemas April 24th 2015.
