Barack Obama wanted for Al Green duet on ‘American Idol’

Producer Nigel Lythgoe tweets directly at the President

Barack Obama has been approached to perform on American Idol with Al Green.

The US president surprised supporters earlier this month when he sang a few lines of Green’s classic ‘Let’s Stay Together’ at a rally in New York, and it has also become the official song for his re-election campaign.

And now, the long-running talent show is trying to get in on the act. Producer Nigel Lythgoe directly tweeted the president, saying:

We loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to American Idol this season for a duet with Al Green.

He continued: “If it were an election based on vocal talent @barackobama would beat Romney hands down. Mitt was very flat singing “America the Beautiful’.”

American Idol judge Steven Tyler of Aerosmith previously praised Obama’s vocal ability, describing him as “very soulful”. Thursday (February 2) will see Madonna debut her music video for ‘Gimme All Your Luvin” on the show.
