Sherlock star rumoured for show's classic villain role
Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is being touted for a major role in showrunner Stephen Moffat’s other hit BBC show, Doctor Who.
According to the Daily Express, the actor is in line to play the Doctor’s arch nemesis and fellow Time Lord The Master in an upcoming episode of the show.
The ‘source’ commented: “It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy The Master for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work. Fans will love the idea of the man who plays Sherlock Holmes taking on the Doctor.”
The character last appeared on screen in 2009, played by Life On Mars actor John Simm. Previous to that, the Master has been played by Derek Jacobi, Eric Roberts, Gordon Tipple amongst others.
Dr Who Magazine has previously called The Master a “Moriarty to the Doctor’s Holmes”, an ironic reference if the reports about Cumberbatch joining the show prove to be true.
Earlier this week, the BBC announced that the seventh revived run of its science fiction classic had resumed production, shooting episodes that will air in the autumn of this year.
