‘Blockbusters’ to return with Simon Mayo

Radio 2 DJ will step into the shoes of the late Bob Holness

Simon Mayo is to host a revived version of Blockbusters.

The Radio 2 DJ has been announced as presenter of the cult classic quiz show, which will air on Challenge TV.

The news comes just weeks after the death of Bob Holness, who presented the classic series.

Mayo said in a statement that the new Blockbusters will remain faithful to the original: “No-one needs to worry. It will be exactly the same – same set, same board, the same theme tune, although slightly updated. The prizes will probably be the same too, although you don’t win a dictionary, you win an e-reader.

“The spirit of the show will be exactly the same, that’s why I said yes. There are very few tried and tested TV formats where you don’t have to agonise over it. The great thing about it is everyone knows it works. It has a play along factor.”

Mayo also revealed that there are plans afoot for a celebrity edition, but that the main concern for everyone involved is to honour Holness’ memory: “It is a feelgood programme, it would be nice to do Bob proud. His legacy is so extraordinary.”
