Chris Evans will be back as host for the special 90-minute episode this June
Channel 4 has confirmed that TFI Friday will return for a one-off live special at 9pm on June 12.
Chris Evans will return for the 90-minute special, which will find the host looking back at classic moments from the show’s “colourful history” as well as “introducing some brand spanking new features”.
Channel 4 also confirmed that “music will form a hugely important part of this very special show” but has yet to confirm which artists have been booked to appear. TFI Friday was known for featuring live performances from the era’s Britpop bands and guests would walk on set to a snippet of ‘The Riverboat Song’ by Ocean Colour Scene – the very first band to perform on the show.
Evans said of the special: “I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years since the first episode of TFI, and I’m thrilled to be bringing the show to a whole new generation who have never experienced the wonders of Baby Left Baby Right or It’s Your Letters.”
TFI Friday launched on Channel 4 in 1996 and Evans hosted the first five series of the popular entertainment show, which was broadcast at 6pm on Friday evenings. The show concluded with a sixth and final series hosted by guest presenters including Elton John, The Spice Girls, Sara Cox, Donna Air and Huey Morgan in 2000.
During a notorious appearance on TFI Friday, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder was heard shouting “fuck!” several times during a performance of Sex Pistols’ ‘Pretty Vacant’ and was subsequently banned from appearing on Channel 4 for a period.
