The star of Arrow and Teen Wolf admits he had become tired of acting
Colton Haynes, the heartthrob star of Teen Wolf and Arrow has come out as gay.
The actor, who is something close to digital royalty with more than 4.2m followers on Instagram despite a relatively low profile as a conventional celebrity, also admitted to suffering from acute life-long anxiety in a revealing interview.
“People want you to be that GQ image that you put out, but people don’t realize what it’s like to act 24 hours a day. I’d go home and I was still acting,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.”
He revealed that he had actually been out since high school to friends, colleagues and family, but that he had taken advice at the start of his career to stay quiet about his sexuality in public.
He also spoke of the anxiety which has dogged him for years, saying: “I’ve had terminal anxiety my entire life. Physically ill, fainting. I’m 27 years old, and I have an ulcer. I had to step back.”
Haynes also revealed that he’d love to make a return to Arrow, a superhero show coming to the end of its fourth season, in which his character is currently in hiding.
He said: “Working for Greg was the greatest experience of my life, and when he offered me Arrow, it was a new beginning for me. I would love to do more. They know I love them. I’d go back in a second.”
