David Fincher to adapt ‘Utopia’ for HBO

US version of Channel 4 drama in the works

David Fincher will adapt last year’s Channel 4 TV drama Utopia for a US version, it has been revealed.

According to Coming Soon Fincher, who has helmed films including The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, has agreed to oversee an adaptation of the series for US network HBO. He will direct the pilot episode of the show, while screenwriter Gillian Flynn – who penned the script for Fincher’s new film Gone Girl – will write the screenplay.

First aired in January 2013, Utopia focused on the lives of five strangers who become fugitives after discovering a mysterious comic book manuscript which brings them to the attention of the shadowy organisation The Network. A second series of the show is expected to be broadcast on Channel 4 later this year (2014).

Fincher’s new project Gone Girl, meanwhile, is adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name (which was also written by Flynn) and tells the tale of a man accused of murdering his wife after she goes missing on their fifth anniversary and stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The film, which will be scored by Nine Inch Nails man Trent Reznor, opens in cinemas in the US on October 3.
