‘Doctor Who’ casts Diana Rigg and daughter in new episode

Diana Rigg and her daughter Rachael Stirling will appear together in the new series of 'Doctor Who'

Dame Diana Rigg and her daughter Rachael Stirling are to star together in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who.

According to the BBC, the actresses will play “a mother and daughter with a dark secret” in an episode written by Mark Gatiss, who has penned four previous episodes of the sci-fi series. It will be the first time Rigg and her daughter have appeared together on screen. Explaining their mutual decision to take on the roles, Stirling said: “We have never before worked together because the offers have not been tempting, but when such a funny and original script comes through you know the time has come.”

Building anticipation for the episode, executive producer Steven Moffat added: “Dame Diana Rigg, Rachael Stirling and a Mark Gatiss script – a combination of talents you could only get in Doctor Who! Frankly, I’m terrified already!”

The episode, to be shown as part of the show’s upcoming seventh season, began shooting at Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff yesterday (July 2). Earlier this month, the first picture of Doctor Who star Matt Smith with new companion Jenna Louise Coleman was released.

Rigg, 73, is best known for her roles as Emma Peel in The Avengers and Countess Teresa di Vicenzo in Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. She was made a Dame in 1994. Her daughter Stirling, 35, has appeared on television in Tipping The Velvet and Women In Love.
