Doctor Who’s real name is Mildred, claims Steven Moffat

Time Lord's secret identity is revealed by the BBC1 series' showrunner

The real name of the Doctor in Doctor Who has been revealed as Mildred.

Showrunner Steven Moffat made the claim in a jokey response to a fan’s query in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine.

Responding to the question about the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswald’s memory, Moffat wrote: “No-one can know the Doctor’s name, except each successive showrunner. We’re taken into a special room far beneath the BBC and given the ancient and special runes that spell his true and awful name. We’re commanded never to reveal what we have learned, because then the show would have to be renamed Mildred. Oh, bugger.”

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 in August for the first series starring Peter Capaldi as the twelfth incarnation of the Time Lord. Guest stars for Series Eight include Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes and Ben Miller. Foxes also appears in episode eight of the 12-part run, in which she will sing a specially-composed track.

Directors for the new series include Kill List director Ben Wheatley and Rachel Talalay, who helmed the 1995 big-screen version of Tank Girl.

Unconfirmed reports claim the Doctor’s nemesis The Master will return in Series Eight for the first time since 2007. If true, it appears unlikely that John Simm will reprise his role.
