Donald Glover compares ‘Atlanta’ season 3 to Kanye West’s ‘Graduation’

The hit TV series was recently renewed for a third season

Donald Glover has compared Atlanta season 3 to Kanye West‘s ‘Graduation‘ album.
The actor’s own hit TV series was recently recommissioned for a third series after the second, Robbin’ Season, aired earlier this year.
Speaking at a panel last week (June 7), Glover told an audience at the Emmys’ FYC screening what to expect from the next installment. “I align the seasons, I think, to me, like Kanye records,” he said. “I feel like this is our ‘Graduation’. This is probably our most accessible but also the realest – an honest version of it – and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album.”

Glover, who also makes music under the moniker Childish Gambino, added that the show’s team had all been “on iMessage together and talking about” the new season. “I think people were really hungry to beat ourselves, which is great,” he said.
Meanwhile, Stephen Glover, Donald’s brother and co-Atlanta writer and producer, gave The Hollywood Reporter more of a hint of what to expect from the next series, suggesting more female-focused storylines would feature. “I think we have some cool ideas in season three that’ll put some more women on screen,” he said. “There’s a very specific perspective from the Atlanta woman that I think we’re gonna explore in season three.”
Currently, the show only has one female lead – Van, played by Zazie Beetz. Speaking to the publication, she said: “There’s no lack of women on the set, but, I think in terms of storytelling, it is different just bonding with a woman and playing with that energy in terms of Van’s character. So it is something I would like to continue exploring.”

Meanwhile, one of Donald Glover’s collaborators has suggested his next record as Childish Gambino could be his last entirely. Speaking to WNYC, creative director Ibre Ake said: “We’re working rapidly to just get as much out as we can. Especially this last run, to really make a big bang, because this is Donald’s last album.”
