Maisie Williams also backs Idris Elba for the role
Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams has stated that she is keen on becoming the first female Doctor in Doctor Who.
Current star Peter Capaldi has hinted at his potential exit, suggesting that the show’s tenth series could be his “final year”. Capaldi replaced Matt Smith in 2014 and is the twelfth actor to play the Doctor.
Williams, who has appeared in Doctor Who as Ashildr, recently told the Evening Standard that the prospect would be “cool” but “right now I’m locked into some other things”. She did however add: “I think a female doctor would be incredible”.
The star has also backed Idris Elba to be the next Doctor. “I think a black doctor would be incredible,” Williams said. “I’m all for Idris Elba – but if not I’ll take it for the team and do it!”
Doctor Who is preparing for a period of transition, with writer Steven Moffat, who has worked on series for the last six years, recently announcing that he will be stepping down from his role as showrunner after the tenth series airs in 2017.
