Here’s the dramatic first trailer for ‘Luther’ series 5

"It's going to get worse. A lot worse".

The first trailer for Luther‘s fifth season has arrived, and it sees an old face making their return from the dead.

After an absence of three years, the first trailer shows John Luther (Idris Elba) as he confronts the darkest of murders with new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku).

Still, it seems like we haven’t seen anything yet. “It’s going to get worse”, the sinister trailer teases.

“A lot worse.”

But as the trailer draws to an end, we see the briefest of glimpses of Luther’s close ally Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). It seems that perhaps she isn’t dead after all, having been previously killed off screen in a one-off episode of the show.

Describing Season 5, Elba previously told Metro: “All I can say is we know how long the fanbase wait for the show, and we’re never taking that lightly.

“So as much as we have to keep one eye on how do we not do what we’ve done before, at the same time saying to the audience, ‘This is Luther’, so you recognise the traits.”

He added: “That’s the tough part. Because after five seasons, you kind of go,’Oh where do we go now?’ and for me I’m very excited about the season, it feels very similar to what we’ve seen but it takes a few turns. Luther is still the character we love to hate.”
