Doug Stamper actor says he is still "processing the whole thing"
House of Cards actor Michael Kelly has described Kevin Spacey’s departure from the show as “heartbreaking” and “tough”.
Spacey has faced numerous accusations of sexual misconduct since Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp alleged late last year that the star made sexual advances towards him when he was 14 years old.
The 58-year-old actor issued a statement via a representative when the initial claims were made against him. It read: “Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. No other information is available at this time.”
Following the allegations against Spacey, Netflix confirmed that House Of Cards would continue without its lead star for a final, sixth season.
After an extended hiatus, season 6 is currently in production and is expected to air in late 2018, with Robin Wright’s character Claire Underwood taking over as President.
Speaking recently to Variety, Kelly – who plays Chief Of Staff Doug Stamper in the show – described how there was confusion among the cast and crew following the allegations.
“The crew was out of work for a long time,” Kelly explained, “and when everything went down, it was sort of like, ‘How do we do it? How do we keep it going?'”
Asked what it was like returning to the set following the Spacey allegations, Kelly said: “It’s such a mixed bag of emotions because I was with that guy every single day… To go back to the same stages, to the same sets, slightly altered with a new President obviously, but to go back to those sets and all of a sudden be with completely different people, it was a strange feeling.”
“I don’t even know how to put it into words because you know one thing for so long and then all of a sudden it’s a completely different world you’re living in,” Kelly continued. “There’s obviously a million emotions that I went through, that I processed during this whole thing. I don’t want to talk too much about it because it was heartbreaking in so many ways.”
Kelly also revealed that he hasn’t spoken to Spacey since the allegations broke. “All I know is what I hear,” he said. “But I don’t know. It’s tough. You go from talking to someone often to not at all, and in any profession, in anything, circumstances removed, what happened removed, it’s strange … and I’m still processing. I haven’t formulated any opinion, and I haven’t talked publicly about it. This is the first thing I’ve ever said. I think I’m still going through a lot, processing the whole thing. It’s tough.”
