‘Inbetweeners’ fans can’t believe that Matt Smith was almost cast as Will McKenzie

"Cannot picture Matt Smith as Will."

Fans of The Inbetweeners were left stunned last night after discovering that Matt Smith was almost cast as Will McKenzie.

As a reunion special called ‘Fwends Reunited’ aired last night, it was briefly mentioned that the Doctor Who star was almost cast as the loveable nerd before Simon Bird eventually bagged the role.

It came after creator Iain Morris revealed the near-casting in 2009 – telling Digital Spy that Dominic Cooper was also previously considered for the role.

“We auditioned literally 1000 people – including Matt Smith who is the new Doctor. And I’m sure Dominic Cooper at one point too. ‘He was brilliant – down to the last two for Will, I think. I think he was a bit too dashing!” said Morris.

“That’s why he’ll be brilliant in Doctor Who – he’s got something sort of heroic about him.”

But while the revelation isn’t new, it still left Inbetweeners fans mulling over what could’ve been.

“Can’t believe the Inbetweeners rejected Matt Smith,” wrote one fan.

Another said: “WHAT THE FUCK?! MATT SMITH COULD’VE BEEN IN THE FUCKING INBETWEENERS?! SKSKSKAHAHSBHSB.”

Meanwhile, Inbetweeners star James Buckley also revealed that he almost had a nasty accident during the filming of one of the show’s episodes.

Ahead of the episode, Blake Harrison – who portrayed Neil – recalled an on-set near-death experience that took place during the filming of the ‘Field Trip’ episode.

The scene in question saw the lads get stranded on a boat, which resulted in Jay Cartwright shooting a flare gun into the air.

Speaking to The Sun, Harrison said that Buckley was having trouble using the prop and struggled to understand producers’ instructions on how to use it.

“He genuinely could have died,” Harrison said of the mishap. “He looked down the barrel of it before it goes off and we were told don’t ever do that because if it goes off, it has the force of a grenade.

“So when James does that and half a second later it comes out, that’s how close we were to recasting.”

Despite returning for a celebration show, Blake Harrison previously admitted that it’s unlikely that the show will ever return for a fourth series. “I just don’t think it would work,” he said.

James Buckley also admitted he thinks that the show would be deemed too offensive.
