‘The Inbetweeners’ team are making a new BBC comedy about footballers

It has the working title 'Afternoons'

The Inbetweeners creators will launch a new comedy show about football players in the Premier League.

Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are working on a six-part series on BBC Two, which has the working title Afternoons.

The premise of the show has parallels to The Inbetweeners. “We’re hoping to show viewers the hilarious inner lives of three young men who just happen to have a very stressful job in the public eye,” the show creators say, with the series focusing on “boys from around the world who are far less proficient with women, money and social media than they are at scoring goals.”

Shane Allen, controller of BBC Comedy, said Morris and Beesley have mostly focused on what the boys get up to beyond the pitch.

“Their take on what happens off the pitch brims with their skill at creating a gang of instantly recognisable characters, memorable dialogue and deftly tuned plots – excruciating humiliation is never far away,” he said.

Neither the cast or the air date for Afternoons has been revealed.

In related news, last month actor James Buckley discussed what went wrong with The Inbetweeners reunion special, Fwends Reunited.

The 10-year anniversary show, which aired on January 1, received poor reviews from fans who reacted negatively to the programme, with many calling it “awful” and “awkward”.

Buckley said that he believed that it would be “impossible to fuck up” and thought that it would involve the four main actors getting together to talk about their memories of making the hit series. It wasn’t until he was sat in front of the show’s host Jimmy Carr that he realised he was mistaken about the show’s format

“There would be a couple of times where I would say something and Jimmy would go, ‘Still bullshitting.’ I got caught where I was acting up as Jay because there was an audience there of Inbetweeners fans and I got caught in this spot between Jay and myself where myself was going, ‘You’re acting like a fucking idiot, you’re being a moron, you’re being a dick.’”
