It’s the channel’s first US import for three years
ITV has bought the rights to screen the new TV series based on the Lethal Weapon films.
Due to begin screening in the US in October, the series is ITV’s first primetime US import since The Americans in 2013.
Made by Fox TV, the TV version sees Clayne Crawford play maverick cop Martin Riggs in the role played by Mel Gibson in the cinema originals. Crawford is most associated with playing Mitch Cafferty in Jericho.
Riggs’ reluctant partner Roger Murtaugh, played by Danny Glover in the films, will be played by Damon Wayans. Wayans has been a regular in Saturday Night Live and In Living Color.
The series also stars Fast And The Furious actress Jordana Brewster and Kevin Rahm, who played Don Draper’s ad agency rival Ted Chaough in Mad Men.
The Americans starred Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as Soviet spies living in North Virginia pretending to be an American married couple. It was not a success for ITV, with the second series shown on ITV3 rather than ITV1 and the third series yet to be shown.
But ITV boss Kevin Lygo said of Lethal Weapon: “We’re absolutely delighted to be bringing ‘Lethal Weapon’ to our main channel. It’s rare that we find an acquisition with that sweet spot potential – the best production values and hugely entertaining drama we think can appeal to the biggest and broadest audiences and take up a place in ITV primetime.”
